In Search of Women's Autobiographies: The Story of a Study
In search of women's autobiographies — the story of a doctoral study spanning 1910 to 1995.
The autobiographies women have written in Marathi are not merely personal recollections — they are documents that stand witness to the society of their time, to the lives of women, and to a shifting order of values. A social study of women's autobiographies between 1910 and 1995 was the subject of my doctoral research.
Out of that research came two edited volumes: Savalitil Bandh-Anubandh, a selection of passages from the autobiographies of the wives of Marathi writers, and Maharashtratil Stree Vichardhara. The study of women's writing and of feminism has remained one of the guiding threads of my life in letters.
